The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan stated today that the recent joint statement issued by Myanmar and China, which expressed support for China’s "unification" and cited UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty, effectively condones China’s stance on the use of force against Taiwan. MOFA expressed strong condemnation, reiterating that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.
MOFA noted that the joint statement on "accelerating the building of a China-Myanmar community with a shared future" released on the 17th denigrates Taiwan’s sovereign status. Taiwan firmly rejects China’s repeated use of bilateral statements to disseminate false narratives aimed at conducting cognitive warfare and unilaterally altering the status quo.
Regarding the new Myanmar government’s continued alignment with China, MOFA expressed deep regret. The Ministry urged Myanmar to recognize the goodwill Taiwan has shown since establishing a representative office in 2016, through cooperation in areas including economic development, public health, human resources, and humanitarian aid. MOFA called upon the Myanmar government to listen to its own people and avoid allowing Chinese influence to hinder future cooperation that could benefit the livelihoods of the local population.
Taiwan remains committed to defending universal values of democracy, freedom, and human rights. It will continue to work with like-minded nations to counter authoritarianism and maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
