Taipei, June 18 (CNA) Amidst ongoing debates over the abolition of the Control Yuan, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim stated today that since the Constitution grants the body supervisory, censure, and impeachment powers, as well as jurisdiction over political donations, its operations should be maintained until constitutional reforms are carried out. She expressed hope that the Legislative Yuan would proceed with the review and consent process for nomination rights.

Following the Presidential Office's announcement of the nominee list for Control Yuan members, the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislative caucus announced it would initiate a constitutional amendment committee to abolish the body. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an also expressed support for its abolition. Among those nominated, Hsieh Cheng-ta, former deputy mayor of New Taipei City, and Liao Wan-ju, former KMT legislator, issued a statement on the 16th declining the nomination.

Responding to this, Vice President Hsiao stated today in an interview at Academia Sinica that while it is regrettable, the government respects their decision, as the matter has been discussed many times in society.

Hsiao noted that Hsieh Cheng-ta had long been involved in public legal aid activities in Hualien and possessed both a legal background and expertise in labor human rights. She explained that the nomination was based on his personal expertise, with the intent of utilizing talent for the nation regardless of party affiliation.

Hsiao stated that while there is much discussion in society regarding the abolition of constitutional bodies, these institutions hold constitutional responsibilities until reform or abolition. To ensure the smooth operation of the nation's democratic system and constitutional framework, she hopes the Legislative Yuan will perform its confirmation duties in accordance with constitutional spirit.

Hsiao added that communication between parties regarding constitutional proposals will continue, and subsequent proposals in the Legislative Yuan will be monitored. The current goal is to ensure smooth national governance and support for the constitutional order.
