Key News on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
Central Report
(MOSCOW, 16th – CNA via international wire services) Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced today that a Ukrainian drone attack damaged facilities at the Moscow Oil Refinery, operated by Gazpromneft, a subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom.
According to Reuters, Sobyanin stated on the messaging app Telegram: "There were no casualties at the site, and emergency response teams are on the scene." He did not specify whether refinery operations were affected.
This refinery is the largest in the Moscow region. Latest data shows it processed 11.6 million tons of crude oil in 2024, producing 2.9 million tons of gasoline and 3.2 million tons of diesel.
Official data, social media reports, and Reuters statistics indicate that since early 2026, drone attacks on Russian refineries have doubled in frequency, leading to full or partial shutdowns of refining operations and declines in gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel production.
The Gazpromneft-operated refinery primarily supplies the Moscow region. So far, no fuel supply disruptions have been reported in the area. However, over a dozen regions across Russia have experienced fuel supply issues as a result of these attacks. (Translator: Kao Chao-fen / Editor: Yang Chao-yen) 1150616
