Central News Agency Report

(Central News Agency reporter Lin Chiao-Lien, Kaohsiung, June 16) Professor Chang Chi-Lung from the College of Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical University recently gave a lecture on the mechanisms of the human immune system. He stated that the immune system functions like a well-trained, clearly divided military force, and that immunity cannot be built solely on health supplements—it requires balanced nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Professor Chang, a long-time immunology researcher who was once selected as one of the world's top 100 scientists, was recently invited to participate in the 'Doctors to Your Home' online lecture series. Under the theme 'Decoding the Human Immune Army from Modern Biomedicine,' he discussed immunity with the public online. He explained that the human immune system is like a well-trained, clearly organized military force, composed of both innate and adaptive immunity working together to form a defense network.

Chang stated that the innate immune system includes neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells, which are responsible for quickly identifying and eliminating invading pathogens. The adaptive immune system, on the other hand, consists of helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, regulatory T cells, and B cells, which form a more efficient defense through precise recognition and memory mechanisms.

Chang noted that many people take large amounts of supplements to boost immunity, but emphasized that immunity does not come from a single supplement—it is built on a foundation of balanced nutrition. He urged the public to consume high-quality proteins, various fruits and vegetables, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, all of which are essential resources for maintaining normal immune cell function.

Additionally, international disease analyst Yu Chu-Yi shared that the five major organs—liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys—each govern different functional systems, including energy regulation, circulation and transport, nutrient supply, respiration, and water metabolism. When these systems remain balanced, the body can adapt to external environmental changes; otherwise, health issues may arise.

Lecture host Hsu Hsin-Hua stated in a press release that health management should not begin only when illness occurs, but should start from daily life. Through good habits, balanced nutrition, and mental and physical well-being, individuals should continuously cultivate their 'immune army' to build a strong defense for health.
