TAIPEI (Central News Agency) — The new office building of the Douliu Police Station under the Yunlin County Police Department was officially inaugurated today, June 15, 2023. Constructed at a cost of NT$424.78 million (approximately USD 42 million), the building features a design combining raw concrete architecture with golden rice stalk imagery, reflecting Yunlin County’s status as a major agricultural region, while incorporating green building and smart building concepts.
The site of the new Douliu Police Station was previously occupied by the Xiangrui Building, which was damaged during the 1999 921 earthquake and had been abandoned for over 18 years. The old station building, over 50 years old, suffered from severe space shortages and outdated facilities, making it inadequate for modern policing needs. After years of effort by successive county magistrates, the police department secured the land, and construction began on November 23, 2022.
Today’s inauguration ceremony was attended by Kuomintang legislator Chang Chia-chun, Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan, and other officials.
Magistrate Chang stated that the old station had become functionally obsolete due to aging infrastructure, and the new building represents not just a physical upgrade but a significant achievement in the county government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement, caring for frontline officers, and safeguarding public safety. She expressed gratitude to the county council and local community members for their support in overcoming financial, planning, and construction challenges.
Yunlin County Police Chief Huang Fu-tsuen emphasized that the new facility provides a safer and more efficient working environment for officers and enables better integration of investigative, traffic, patrol, technological policing, and public service functions. He added that the department will continue advancing toward the goals of “technology-assisted, professional enforcement, and warm-hearted service,” leveraging AI patrols, technological tools, and data analytics to enhance public security governance.
The new seven-story building (one underground, six above ground) incorporates green building principles, smart infrastructure, and energy-saving management systems. Its exterior blends raw concrete architectural language with golden rice motifs, symbolizing Yunlin’s agricultural heritage. Additionally, a public art installation titled 'Youguang Feiyu' (Citrus Light, Flying Feathers) integrates local elements such as Douliu pomelos, symbols of peace, and the protective role of police, transforming the station into a landmark that reflects regional identity, public aesthetics, and community engagement.
