US-Iran War Key News
Central Message
(Central News Agency, Washington, April 14 -综合 international news) A major breakthrough has emerged in the nearly four-month conflict between the United States and Iran. The two countries announced today that they have reached a preliminary agreement. While official details have not yet been released, Iranian media reported that the draft agreement reportedly contains 14 key points, including an immediate and permanent ceasefire across all fronts—including Lebanon—U.S. troop withdrawal from surrounding areas, and the phased release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Al Jazeera reported that the actual details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed. However, according to Iran's Mehr News Agency, the draft agreement includes 14 items.
These include: an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon; full lifting of maritime blockades within 30 days; a U.S. commitment to withdraw troops stationed around Iran; and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The draft also states: a temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil sales; reaching a final agreement on nuclear issues within 60 days of signing the deal; and the release of $24 billion worth of frozen Iranian assets during the 60-day negotiation period.
Mehr News Agency also reported that final negotiations will only begin once half of Iran’s frozen assets have been released and restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz have been lifted.
The report further notes that Iran’s missile program and its support for allied armed groups in the region are not included in the current negotiations.
Al Jazeera stated that it could not independently verify the details reported by Mehr News Agency.
The Trump administration has not immediately commented on the agreement details. There may be some controversy surrounding this, as the U.S. aims both to end Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and to address Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. On the latter, many believe that part of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile may have already been destroyed by a U.S. airstrike last year.
According to Reuters, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the former Biden administration’s State Department, said that Trump made significant concessions to Iran in order to restore pre-war conditions.
Miller stated: 'There is no guarantee of resolving Iran’s nuclear program; but Iran has shown the world that by holding the global economy hostage, it can extract concessions from the United States.'
This conflict, triggered by a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike on Iran on February 28, has so far resulted in thousands of deaths, with Iran and Lebanon suffering the most. During this period, Iran retaliated against Israel, attacked Persian Gulf countries hosting U.S. troops, and effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, causing global energy prices to skyrocket. In response, U.S. forces then blockaded Iranian ports. (Translation: Tsai Chia-min) 1150615
