(Central News Agency, Mexico City, 13th -综合 international reports) Local authorities in southern Mexico's Oaxaca state announced today that Joel Bravo, mayor of the town of San Miguel Amatitlan, was fatally shot by armed attackers. The local prosecutor's office has launched a full investigation, and security forces have been deployed to apprehend the suspects.
According to reports from AFP and Reuters, the incident occurred in San Miguel Amatitlan, a small town in Oaxaca state with a population of around 7,000. The state prosecutor confirmed Bravo's death in a statement but did not disclose specific details about the attack.
Authorities have not revealed the possible motive behind Bravo's killing. Bravo belonged to an opposition coalition that includes the National Action Party.
Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara condemned the attack in a post on social media platform X, stating: 'In Oaxaca, we will not allow violence to override the law or the will of the community.'
The prosecutor's office said police have increased security in the area and, in coordination with federal forces, deployed tactical units to pursue the perpetrators.
Oaxaca, which borders the Pacific Ocean, is a strategic corridor contested by major drug cartels seeking control over trafficking routes. Currently, the 'Jalisco New Generation' (Jalisco Nueva Generacion) and 'Sinaloa' cartels are both highly active in the region.
Since the outbreak of drug-related violence in Mexico in 2006, nearly 100 mayors have been killed. (Translation: Tsai Chia-min) 1150614
