Japan's Ministry of Defense announced that a Chinese People's Liberation Army Y-9 electronic surveillance aircraft and a TB-001 reconnaissance and attack-capable drone conducted flights in the East China Sea yesterday. Both aircraft traversed airspace south of the Nansei Islands near Nagasaki Prefecture to the waters off Okinawa Island, entering Japan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), prompting the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) to scramble fighter jets in response.
According to reporting by Minaminihon Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), citing the Joint Staff of the Ministry of Defense, the Y-9 aircraft flew from mainland China toward the waters south of the男女 Islands (Goto Islands) in Nagasaki Prefecture in the afternoon. It then proceeded southwest before turning northeast off the coast of Okinawa Island. The aircraft altered its course again south of the Goto Islands, heading back toward mainland China.
Meanwhile, a drone identified as the TB-001 was also detected in the East China Sea on the same afternoon. It appeared south of the Goto Islands, changed course southward, and later altered its route off the coast of Okinawa Island, flying back toward mainland China.
Flight paths released by the Ministry of Defense indicate that both aircraft passed through waters off Yakushima Island and Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture, the Amami Islands, and off the main island of Okinawa. In response, fighter jets from the Western Air Defense Force of the JASDF were scrambled for surveillance and interception.
While no violation of Japanese airspace was confirmed, such activities reflect an ongoing pattern of increased Chinese military aerial operations near Japan. The Ministry of Defense continues to monitor the situation closely and strengthen surveillance and readiness measures amid rising regional tensions.
