(CNA Reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Chiayi County, 12th) The Zhongquan Bridge in Shilong Village, Zhongpu Township, Chiayi County, which suffered severe damage and collapsed making it impassable following the impact of Typhoon Danas and continuous heavy rainfall last year, is being rebuilt and widened with a central government grant of NT$48.08 million. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held today, with completion expected in June next year.
Located on Route Chiayi 135-3, Zhongquan Bridge is not only a crucial external access route for residents of the Shilong Village area but also a vital transportation lifeline for the outward shipment of agricultural products from the mountainous region and local industrial development. Hundreds of local residents, along with County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang, DPP Legislator Chen Kuan-ting, and Zhongpu Township Mayor Li Pi-yun, attended the groundbreaking and blessing ceremony for the new bridge construction this afternoon.
According to a press release issued by the Chiayi County Economic Development Department, the rebuilt Zhongquan Bridge will have a total length of 180 meters and a width of 8 meters, featuring one lane in each direction. The bridge reconstruction is designed as a "prestressed concrete bridge," with the main body measuring 53 meters. In addition to rebuilding the bridge itself, the project concurrently includes the reconstruction and widening of 127 meters of approach roads on both ends, comprehensively enhancing road service quality and travel safety.
Furthermore, the long-standing problem of road narrowness at the intersection of Route Chiayi 135 and Route Chiayi 135-3 will be addressed simultaneously in this project. The "Lin Clan Association" specifically purchased and unconditionally provided land, allowing the Zhongquan Bridge to be straightened and preventing road bottlenecks. Once completed, it will effectively improve the sight distance for driving and traffic flow, providing a safer and more convenient transportation environment for residents.
Magistrate Weng stated that in the face of the disaster's impact, the county government and the Zhongpu Township Office immediately launched damage investigations and rehabilitation planning, actively fighting for reconstruction funds from the central government. He expressed gratitude to the Highway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Public Construction Commission of the Executive Yuan for their full support in approving the NT$48.08 million reconstruction budget. He also thanked Legislator Chen Kuan-ting for his efforts in coordinating with the central government.
The Economic Development Department pointed out that in July last year, Typhoon Danas brought strong winds and heavy rains to Taiwan. Coupled with the continuous rainfall that washed away the riverbed, the foundations of the Zhongquan Bridge piers were severely undermined, and the riverbed consolidation works and revetment facilities were damaged, posing a major threat to the structural safety of the bridge. After detailed inspections and evaluations by professional engineers and relevant units, it was confirmed that the bridge had reached a dangerous level, and the county government immediately implemented a total closure based on public safety considerations.
During the bridge closure, residents had to detour 700 meters to the Shinan Bridge downstream for access, causing great inconvenience to local traffic, students commuting, residents seeking medical care, and agricultural transportation. Therefore, the Zhongpu Township Office coordinated with Chang Feng-min, a landowner next to the flood control road, who unconditionally provided the land to rush the construction of a temporary road for public use, thereby shortening travel time.
