(Central News Agency reporter Huang Chiao-wen, Taipei, June 12) The Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced that thunderstorms are expected in central and northern Taiwan, eastern regions, and mountainous areas after noon tomorrow, with mountainous areas under alert for heavy rain. From June 14 to 15, unstable weather due to a frontal system and southwest winds will bring heavy or torrential rains to central and southern Taiwan. Moisture will remain high on the 16th, with conditions gradually stabilizing from the 17th onward.

The CWA warned that short-duration intense rainfall is likely under the influence of the frontal system. Today, localized heavy rain or torrential rain is expected in Yunlin, Nantou, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung counties. Isolated heavy rain is also possible in mountainous areas of Hsinchu to Taichung, Yilan, and Hualien. Mountainous regions should remain vigilant against landslides, rockfalls, and sudden river surges, while low-lying areas should watch for flooding.

CWA forecaster Lai Hsin-kuo told CNA reporters that tomorrow will be a temporary break in rainfall, as the front moves to the northern sea. Before noon, most areas will remain mostly cloudy, but afternoon thunderstorms are likely in central and northern Taiwan, northeastern and eastern regions, and mountainous areas, with localized heavy rain possible in mountainous zones. At night, as southwest winds strengthen, scattered brief showers or thunderstorms will gradually develop in southern Taiwan.

Lai noted that increased moisture from the southwest monsoon on the 14th, combined with the front lingering near northern Taiwan’s sea on June 14–15, will bring significant rainfall to western Taiwan—especially central and southern regions—where localized heavy rain or short-duration torrential rain is possible.

From June 14–15, eastern Taiwan will be mostly cloudy with localized afternoon thunderstorms. Mountainous areas in northern and eastern Taiwan may also experience isolated heavy rain in the afternoons.

From June 16 to 18, the front will gradually move northward and away. Lai said moisture will remain high on the 16th, with scattered brief showers or thunderstorms continuing in western Taiwan. On the 17th and 18th, moisture will further decrease, with only areas south of Chiayi likely to see rain, while afternoon localized thunderstorms may still occur across the island.

Starting Friday, June 19, the Pacific high-pressure system will extend further westward, leading to more stable weather. Most areas will see mostly cloudy to sunny conditions, with isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible in central and northern Taiwan, northeastern regions, and mountainous areas nationwide.

Regarding temperatures, Lai said tomorrow’s highs will range from 29 to 31°C. From June 14–16, due to rain and cloud cover, highs will be between 26 and 28°C. From the 17th onward, temperatures will rise above 30°C nationwide, reaching 32–33°C on the 18th and 19th.

On the possibility of typhoons in mid-to-late June, Lai stated that some models suggest tropical disturbances may develop between the Philippines and Guam, but as they are far from Taiwan and subject to high variability, their tracks remain uncertain. The strength of the Pacific high-pressure system will need to be monitored to assess potential impacts. (Edited by Chen Jen-hua) 1150612
