(Central News Agency, Tehran, 9th, Comprehensive Foreign News) According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the United States launched airstrikes against Iran today in response to Iran shooting down a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media subsequently reported that the situation is now 'calm'.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a senior official stated that the US airstrikes targeted Iranian air defense facilities and radar near the Strait of Hormuz.
The military stated that these defensive strikes were carried out on the orders of US President Donald Trump. The US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement: 'This mission was a proportionate response to Iran's unprovoked act of aggression.'
Trump accused Iran today of shooting down a US Apache helicopter. Multiple US officials said the helicopter was attacked by an Iranian Shahed drone while patrolling off the coast of Oman.
Iranian officials said Iran did not intentionally target the helicopter, but Iran has recently been launching drones at commercial vessels cooperating with the US that transit the Strait of Hormuz. US officials stated that regardless of whether the attack was 'intentional', a response was necessary.
This latest development threatens to break the fragile ceasefire, especially as sporadic clashes have occurred recently in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has launched drones multiple times during the ceasefire at commercial vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, and the US has also conducted multiple airstrikes on Iranian targets to prevent the Tehran regime from strengthening its control over the Strait.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported that airstrikes have stopped in the southern coastal areas of Iran near the Strait of Hormuz following the US airstrike retaliation for the downing of the US helicopter.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting stated on the Telegram messaging platform: 'The situation is reported to be calm at present.' (Editor: Lu Yingzi) 1150610
