(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 9, Reporter Zeng Yunting) In response to foreign media reports that the Taiwanese government plans to strengthen controls on high-end chip exports to China, the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated in the evening that the government will continue to strengthen Taiwan's management mechanism for strategic high-tech goods to comply with international export control trends and protect national security. Currently, both Taiwan and the US are in continuous consultation on issues such as bringing high-end chips under control.
Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Taiwan is considering implementing stricter export controls on the sale of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China, aiming to further align with US measures. This is intended to provide authorities with more legal tools to address the transshipment of advanced hardware from Taiwan to China, such as AI servers equipped with Nvidia Corp. chips.
The report also said that under restrictions first implemented by the US in 2022, US regulations already prohibit such sales to prevent China from using Nvidia's advanced processors for military advantages, unless the relevant companies obtain permission from Washington. Taiwan currently does not consider unauthorized exports of AI chips to China a crime but warns potential sellers that continuing transactions could violate US regulations.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that as part of ongoing trade negotiations with the US, Taipei officials are currently considering implementing stronger AI chip controls, expanding sales restrictions to all customers in China, rather than just specific companies on the export blacklist, such as Huawei. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
