Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai presided over a Police Day celebration today to commend outstanding police officers and related personnel. He detailed Kaohsiung's impressive public safety satisfaction scores and improvements in police welfare, and encouraged the entire force with the movie line, "With great power comes great responsibility."

The Kaohsiung City Government Police Department held the "115th Police Day Celebration" at 2:30 PM today at the city police headquarters. Chen Chi-mai attended to present awards, commending outstanding police and personnel for their long-term dedication to their posts, their efforts in maintaining public order and traffic safety, and their contributions to protecting the lives and property of citizens.

In his speech, Chen Chi-mai joked that this was his last time attending a Police Day awards event as mayor. He said that during his mayorship, the calls he most dreaded receiving at night were from Kaohsiung Police Commissioner Chao Jui-hua and Fire Department Director Wang Chih-ping, as such a call meant he wouldn't be sleeping that night. He added, however, that a mayor taking a call is a small matter compared to the hardship police officers face working through the night.

Chen stated that Kaohsiung's policing and public safety performance has continuously improved in recent years. According to the latest 2026 "County and City Mayor Governance Satisfaction Survey" by CommonWealth Magazine, Kaohsiung once again earned the honor of being a five-star city. The overall governance satisfaction ranked first among the six special municipalities. After ranking second for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, the satisfaction ratings for both "Policing and Public Safety" and "Roads and Traffic" ranked first among the six municipalities in 2026, setting the best record since 2011.

He pointed out that the city government also fully supports the police in combating crime, allocating a budget of over NT$165 million this year to purchase police cars and motorcycles. The city has also increased the cap for overtime pay to NT$19,000 per month, striving to improve the working environment and various welfare facilities for the police.

Regarding the improvement of office environments, Chen also mentioned that several renovation and new construction projects are underway. These include the new Nanzih Precinct building project, expected to start by the end of the year, and subsequent projects for the Gangshan Precinct office and the Sanmin First Precinct's Changming Street Police Station. The Changming station will be part of a public-led urban renewal project, creating a brand-new office next to the train station.

Finally, Chen Chi-mai quoted the classic line from the movie "Spider-Man," "With great power comes great responsibility," exhorting all personnel that whether they are investigating major crimes or assisting a lost elderly person, they are accumulating good deeds for society and allowing citizens to enjoy a peaceful and happy life.

The City Police Department explained that this year's honorees include three model police mothers, eight model police officers, two senior distinguished officers, and four outstanding officers who solved special major criminal cases. The awardees have all demonstrated outstanding performance in areas such as maintaining public order, crime prevention and investigation, traffic management, and public service, fully embodying the professional spirit and selfless dedication of the police.

It is worth noting that among the 29 national model police officers selected this year, three are from Kaohsiung City, giving it the highest proportion of awardees among all police agencies nationwide.
