(Central News Agency, Belfast, 9th, comprehensive foreign report) Police in Northern Ireland today arrested a Sudanese man, accusing him of being involved in a knife attack in North Belfast late last night, which left one person seriously injured. A video of the incident went viral online, sparking protests and outcry.

According to Reuters, Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson of the Police Service of Northern Ireland declared the case a "major incident" and said at a press conference: "I understand that last night's attempted murder will evoke a range of complex emotions from fear to anger among the public."

Henderson stated that the victim, a man in his 40s, suffered a serious eye injury and was also slashed on his face and back in the "brutal" attack. Police later found a cleaver believed to be involved at the scene. The 30-year-old Sudanese man suspected of the crime is currently in custody for attempted murder.

Police said the suspect is understood to live near the scene of the incident. He was granted leave to remain in the UK in September 2023 after applying for asylum. He had arrived in Belfast by bus from Dublin in February of the same year, with the date of his flight from Paris to Dublin being unknown.

While the incident is not currently being treated as a terrorist incident, it comes at an extremely sensitive time as British society is on high alert due to another event. Previously, a student was fatally wounded after being stabbed, but responding police believed the attacker's false claim of being a victim of racism and handcuffed the student instead, leading to his death from his injuries and causing national outrage.

Crowds are now calling for a protest to be held this evening. Police have promised to increase patrol deployments throughout the area. (Compiled by: Chang Ming-hsuan) 1150610
