(Central News Agency, reporter Wang Shufen, Taipei, 8th) Asparagus is a high-economic-value crop whose cultivation and harvesting rely heavily on manual labor. The Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has introduced high-clearance tractors, combined with other equipment, to establish an integrated management model for asparagus fields, achieving both labor savings and quality improvement.

The MOA issued a press release today stating that in response to the challenges of an aging rural workforce and labor shortages, and to enhance the production efficiency and competitiveness of domestic asparagus, the Tainan Station is promoting "Mechanized Asparagus Field Management Technology." This involves introducing high-clearance tractors with various attachments to create a streamlined, labor-saving management model.

The Tainan Station explained that asparagus is a high-value crop, but field management tasks are arduous. Traditionally, operations such as mother stalk renewal, residue removal, ridging, fertilization, and pesticide application relied heavily on manual labor or small farm machinery. This not only consumed significant manpower but also led to inconsistent management quality due to operational variations. The integrated management system using high-clearance tractors can significantly reduce the physical strain on farmers who must otherwise bend over and carry loads for extended periods, while also improving the consistency of field management.

The Tainan Station introduced that this labor-saving asparagus field management system uses the high-clearance tractor as the primary power source, equipped with specialized implements such as an asparagus-specific branch shredder, a cultivator-ridger, an organic fertilizer spreader, and a frame-type sprayer. These can be applied to mother stalk renewal, nutrient management, and pest and disease control.

The Tainan Station noted that asparagus production requires not only high yields but also stable quality and supply of young spears. The introduction of mechanized field management will standardize operations like mother stalk cultivation, nutrient management, and pest control. This will not only reduce the labor burden on farmers and mitigate the impact of labor shortages but also achieve the dual benefits of stable yields and improved quality.
