(CNA, Reporter Liu Shih-yi, Taipei, 7th) A man surnamed Chen, who was stopped by police for suspicious behavior while riding a motorcycle in Xizhi District, New Taipei City on the 6th, tested positive for amphetamines in a rapid drug saliva test. The Shilin District Prosecutors Office successfully applied to the court for his detention today, which was approved.
According to the police and prosecutors' investigation, Chen was riding a heavy motorcycle in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, around 9 PM on the 6th when he was stopped by police for suspicious behavior. A rapid drug saliva test administered to him showed a positive reaction for the Class 2 narcotic amphetamine. Police arrested him in accordance with the law and transferred him to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office for investigation.
After questioning, the prosecutor determined that Chen was a major suspect in the criminal offense of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and that there was a risk of him repeatedly committing the same crime. Today, the prosecutor applied to the Shilin District Court for preventive detention, and the court ruled to grant the detention.
The Shilin Prosecutors Office pointed out that this is another successful case of preventive detention following the court's approval of detention in two other drug driving cases yesterday. The fact that all three cases in just two days received the court's support fully demonstrates the Shilin Prosecutors' proactive measures and concrete results in using the preventive detention system to block the risk of re-offending and maintain public safety.
The Shilin Prosecutors emphasized that drug driving seriously endangers the lives, bodies, and property of road users. They will continue to implement the "zero tolerance for drug driving" policy of the Ministry of Justice and the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office. For illegal acts of driving under the influence of drugs, they will adhere to the principles of swift investigation and strict accountability, and actively use coercive measures such as preventive detention to fully prevent dangerous driving, protecting traffic order and public safety with concrete actions.
