(Central News Agency, Hualien County, 6th) In the wake of the disaster caused by the overflow of the Mataian River barrier lake in Guangfu Township, Hualien, Taiwan Sugar Corporation's Hualien Plant has been involved in rescue and reconstruction efforts. Taiwan Sugar stated that in addition to reducing rent for businesses in the park, it will release approximately 171 hectares of land in two phases for farmers to resume cultivation or for the government to coordinate use.

Taiwan Sugar Vice President Tseng Chien-chan said in a media interview today that the Hualien Plant, located in Guangfu Township, is on higher ground and suffered minor damage. Immediately after the disaster, it opened 26 hectares of land as a rescue base, providing buildings and accommodation for rescue teams, medical teams, and volunteers.

He stated that large amounts of mud, abandoned vehicles, and waste were temporarily stored on Taiwan Sugar's forestland and vacant lots. The company has continued to provide administrative and material support behind the scenes to help the local area through the crisis.

As the mud damaged many farmlands, Ou Chu-nan, Deputy Director of Taiwan Sugar's Hualien-Taitung District Office, said that after surveying arable land, the first phase released 15 hectares of land for the Agriculture and Food Agency to coordinate leasing. Eight hectares have already been contracted and are under cultivation, mainly around the Guangfu and Zhongyuan farms, allowing farmers to use them nearby.

Ou Chu-nan said that an additional 156 hectares of land will be released for government planning, to be used for off-site replanting or agricultural production adjustments after the disaster.

Regarding the impact of reduced tourist numbers on tenant businesses after the disaster, Ou Chu-nan said that rent has been waived for tenants since the disaster, reducing their monthly burden by approximately NT$670,000 and lowering their operating costs.

He also mentioned that as recovery progresses, the sugar factory continues to revitalize the park space. Recently, events have been held to increase foot traffic and boost tourism and the local economy in central and southern Hualien. A music market will be held next week, inviting tourists to visit Guangfu. (Editor: Chen Renhua) 1150606
