(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 5) During a recent commencement ceremony at Shih Hsin University, President Chen Ching-ho advised students on time and emotional management, stating that if they failed, they should "end yourself quickly, because the world no longer needs you." This remark ignited online debate. Chen announced on June 5 that he would suspend himself without pay for two months as an apology.
Shih Hsin University held its 114th academic year commencement on the evening of May 30. During the evening session for master's and doctoral graduates, Chen shared his experience with self-management, saying he never shows fatigue to the outside world. He warned graduates that if they fail to manage their time, emotions, and health, they should "end yourself quickly, because the world no longer needs you."
The remarks sparked heated online discussion. On June 4, the university issued a statement explaining that Chen's intention was to encourage graduates to cultivate resilience against pressure and setbacks, maintain a work-life balance, and take care of their physical and mental health.
On June 5, Chen issued a statement on social media, acknowledging that due to a tight schedule, his speech lacked prudence. He stated his original intention was to encourage graduates to improve their interpersonal skills, but he failed to express himself clearly.
Chen emphasized that his meaning was "by no means the discussion of inappropriate views on life as referred to by the media or on social platforms." However, he offered his deepest apologies for the trouble and hurt caused, and announced a self-imposed two-month suspension without pay, effective June 8, promising to reflect deeply and speak more cautiously in the future.
The university also issued a statement apologizing for the social attention and alumni concern caused by the incident. To ensure smooth school operations, Vice President Lin Heng-chih will assume the role of acting president starting June 8.
The university emphasized that all teaching, research, administrative, and enrollment operations are well-established, and the entire administrative team will perform their duties to ensure that student rights and school operations are not affected. (Editor: Li Shuhua) 1150605
