(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 5) The latest data from the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) shows that the number of Taiwanese citizens detained in China for religious reasons has increased by 5 cases in two weeks. SEF Deputy Secretary-General Li Baowen stated that I-Kuan Tao members account for a disproportionately high number of detentions and advised against traveling to China for any related activities.

The SEF held a background briefing this afternoon, chaired by Li Baowen.

On May 22, SEF Secretary-General Lo Wen-chia disclosed that since 2019, there have been 17 cases (19 individuals) of Taiwanese citizens detained in China for religious reasons, with I-Kuan Tao accounting for 13 cases (14 individuals).

The latest data released by the SEF today shows 22 cases (24 individuals), with I-Kuan Tao accounting for 18 cases (19 individuals). Compared to the May 22 data, there are 5 new cases (5 individuals) reported in two weeks. The SEF compiles data based on the reporting date, which may not be the same as the date of the incident.

Li Baowen stated that the SEF learns about restrictions on Taiwanese citizens' personal freedom in China through petitions. Since 2019, there have been 22 petitions (24 individuals) related to detention for religious reasons, with I-Kuan Tao accounting for the highest proportion at 18 cases (19 individuals). This data is also shared with other government agencies.

He said that after receiving such reports, the SEF maintains close contact with the families of those involved. Based on mutual trust and respect for the families' opinions, the SEF typically does not disclose many details of the cases publicly, but uses statistical data to alert the public.

Li Baowen emphasized that China's control over religion is becoming increasingly strict, with many arbitrary determinations of illegality. The number of reports the SEF received in May regarding the detention of I-Kuan Tao members in China has increased significantly compared to the past. He advised the public to carefully assess the necessity of traveling to China and specifically warned I-Kuan Tao members to avoid engaging in any activities there. (Editor: Yang Sheng-ju) 1150605
