Guangdong official appointed as Deputy Director of Liaison Office in Hong Kong

According to the Central News Agency, the Chinese State Council announced on the 1st the appointment of Yuan Gujie, former Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, as Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Analysts believe that Yuan's familiarity with Hong Kong's situation, combined with her work experience in mainland China, will be conducive to promoting the central government's established policy of 'cooperation and development between Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.' Yuan previously served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission. She succeeds Liu Guangyuan. Hong Kong's 'HK01' cited former NPC Standing Committee member Tam Yiu-chung as saying that since Yuan comes from Guangdong, he believes she is familiar with Hong Kong's situation and can promote cooperation between Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area in the future. The report also noted that Yuan, 58, is another official from Guangdong to be appointed to a senior position in the Liaison Office following former Director Zheng Yanxiong, and is the only official from Guangdong in the current leadership of the Liaison Office.
