Jakarta Lights Up for Vesak, Showcasing Religious Harmony

To celebrate Vesak 2570, the Jakarta local government and two major Buddhist organizations are revitalizing public spaces in the city center with various historical decorations and light installations, demonstrating Indonesia's emphasis on religious harmony. Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. This year, the Jakarta government is collaborating with the Indonesian Buddhist Association (Permabudhi) and the Indonesian Buddhist Representative Council (Walubi) under the theme 'Illumination of Jakarta: Glow of Peace,' held from the 28th to the 1st of next month at the 'Bundaran HI' landmark. The opening ceremony took place last night, attended by Deputy Governor Rano Karno and other officials. Lin Yongqing, Vice Chairman of the Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Buddhist Association, told the Central News Agency that a 6-meter-tall giant Buddha light sculpture serves as the core symbol, surrounded by themed exhibition areas. He explained that the 'Ashoka Pillar,' symbolizing peace and religious harmony, has become a city highlight, boosting local night tourism. The Indonesian government officially recognizes six major religions, and their core holidays are national public holidays.
