'Jesus Christ Superstar' brings steel stage to Taiwan, rocking the struggle between humanity and divinity

The legendary rock musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' created by musical theater godfather Andrew Lloyd Webber, will debut in Taiwan this June, more than half a century after its inception. The steel stage breaks the framework of myth, using rock music to tell the story of human struggle and religious redemption. 'Jesus Christ Superstar' was Webber's third musical, first released as a rock concept album in 1970 and hitting the Broadway stage in 1971, where it became an instant success. Unlike traditional religious preaching, Webber focuses on the final seven days from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion, with actors dynamically singing about their inner struggles. It is astonishing that such a bold and subversive work could be born half a century ago. This play established Webber's status as a superstar in the music world, leading to subsequent heavyweights like 'Cats' and 'The Phantom of the Opera.' From the extreme rock of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' to the classical opera style of 'The Phantom of the Opera,' these two musical DNAs seem to conflict but are equally infectious and persuasive, which is the key to Webber's global appeal for half a century. Luke Street, who plays Jesus, said, "This Jesus is not just a historical or religious figure, but also carries a part of my own humanity." He noted that Jesus is a highly symbolic role, and everyone has their own imagination. "I feel the emotional drain is immense. Accurately interpreting the psychological fear of Jesus during his struggle is a huge test for both voice and physical strength; I just keep drinking lots of water." This time, the stage abandons the traditional glitzy scenes of musicals, and the space feels like a giant industrial steel scaffolding. Javon King, who plays the betrayer Judas, said he wants to break people's stereotypes about Judas. "He is not just a villain, but a human with emotions. His betrayal stems from love. I hope the audience can understand him, not just hate him." King believes this musical is still real today. "It's like influencer culture; society will put someone on a pedestal, but if they don't meet expectations, it will ruthlessly destroy them." According to press materials released by KHAM, 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is a story about "humanity," blending rock, soul, and even vaudeville styles. Classic tracks include "Superstar," "I Don’t Know How to Love Him," "Heaven on Their Minds," and "Gethsemane." Once the music starts, it is not only easy to understand but also allows one to feel the immortal power of this classic musical. The full musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' will be performed at the National Theater in Taipei from June 18th to 21st.
