Latvian Parliament Approves New Government, Prioritizing National Security and Finance

According to the Central News Agency (CNA) reporting from Vilnius, the Latvian parliament approved a new coalition government on the 28th. Andris Kulbergs, leader of the United List party, will serve as Prime Minister. The new government will serve a short term until the parliamentary elections in October, with policy priorities including strengthening national security, anti-drone capabilities, budget consolidation, and fighting corruption. Recently, a Ukrainian drone crashed in Latvia, sparking defense controversies and leading to the resignation of former Prime Minister Evika Silina and the collapse of the previous coalition. According to Latvian Public Media (LSM), the new coalition won 66 out of 100 votes in parliament. In his speech, Kulbergs emphasized the need for an "efficient, professional, and responsible government," stating that "economy and security are inseparable." The new coalition consists of the New Unity party, the Greens and Farmers Union, the United List, and the National Alliance. The cabinet has 15 members, with only two women. The policy statement includes 52 measures, such as strengthening border security, tightening immigration policies, continuing support for Ukraine, fighting corruption, and increasing transparency in government procurement. The government also plans to review the national budget structure, the Rail Baltica project, and the operational plan of the national airline, airBaltic, by August.
