Brazilian Presidential Candidate Flavio Bolsonaro Visits White House to Shake Off Scandals

Brazilian Senator and presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro met with U.S. President Trump at the White House today. He hopes to shake off recent scandals that have affected his support and prepare for Brazil's presidential election this October. Reuters reports that Flavio is the eldest son of Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right former president and ally of Trump. The meeting took place in the Oval Office, and Flavio held a press conference in Washington afterward to explain the situation. Flavio revealed that Trump asked about his father's current situation. Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Supreme Court last September for plotting to remain in power after losing the 2022 election to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Trump and Flavio also exchanged views on how the two countries can address organized crime and tariff issues, as well as cooperation related to rare earths and critical minerals. Brazilian President Lula also visited the White House to meet with Trump on the 7th of this month. After that meeting, Trump praised Lula as "very energetic" and described the talks as "very smooth." Flavio is currently facing a political crisis. Recent polls show his competitiveness against incumbent President Lula has weakened ahead of the October election. The controversy stems from Flavio admitting that he solicited funds from a Brazilian banker imprisoned for fraud to film a movie about his father. Flavio argues that the negotiations were private investment contracts and did not involve any quid pro quo or misconduct. He previously denied having any contact with the banker.
