Clabo Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Ikuma Ueno) conducted a survey on how 746 domestic cryptocurrency investors manage their "seed phrases," which are essential for wallet recovery.

The survey revealed that the most common method of storing seed phrases was not "writing it on paper" (22.5%), but rather "using a smartphone memo app" (34.9%).

Furthermore, while digital storage methods utilizing smartphone memo apps, PC files, and cloud storage are widely adopted, a clear disparity in management awareness by demographic has emerged. The usage rate of phone memos among those in their 40s is exceptionally high at 41.2%, whereas veterans with over 5 years of investment experience heavily emphasize offline management using paper (32.9%) or metal plates (17.7%).

This report details the differences in management practices based on the amount of assets held, as well as the reality of the 11.7% of respondents overall who stated they "do not manage it" or "do not know what a seed phrase is."

Survey Findings

### The Most Common Seed Phrase Storage is Smartphone Memo Apps

Smartphone Memo App Usage Reaches 34.9%

Many investors prioritize convenience above all else, routinely utilizing smartphones to manage their cryptocurrency. In this survey, 34.9% of respondents chose "smartphone memo apps" as their preferred location for storing seed phrases. This is the highest percentage among all methods.

The ease of instantly recording information on a device constantly at hand likely attracts many users. However, behind this convenience lies a severe security risk. The loss of the device or a virus infection translates directly to the loss of assets.

Investors must realize that they are walking a dangerous line by prioritizing convenience too heavily. A management system that does not lose sight of the core objective—protecting one's assets—is strongly required.

### Recording on Paper Remains at 22.5%

As a standard security practice, "recording on offline paper and storing it strictly" has long been recommended. Based on this data, investors choosing paper storage account for only 22.5% of the total.

While a significant number of investors still opt for this method, the reality highlights that it is not the mainstream choice. For modern investors accustomed to utilizing digital devices and IT tools daily, analog methods may seem inefficient.

On the other hand, the safety of paper storage, which carries zero risk of hacking, offers an undeniable advantage. As reliance on digital tools grows, it is alarming that what can be considered the fundamental method of asset protection is being neglected.

### Digital Environment Storage Exceeds 70%

In this survey, combining smartphone memo apps, PC files, and cloud storage reveals that a staggering 77.5% of respondents have chosen a digital environment.

This indicates that the vast majority of investors are storing their seed phrases in areas accessible online. While the high level of convenience is clear, the fact that they are constantly exposed to internet threats cannot be ignored. PCs and the cloud can easily become primary targets for cybercrimes such as hacking, malware infections, and phishing attacks.

The fact that so many users choose online digital storage should serve as a wake-up call to radically change attitudes toward asset defense.

### Outstanding Use of Phone Memos in the 40s Demographic

Breaking down the survey results by age group revealed significant trends among specific generations. Notably, the usage rate of smartphone memos among those in their 40s is strikingly high at 41.2%.

The fact that those in their 40s, the most active and prime working-age investment demographic, are leaning heavily toward the highest-risk management method cannot be overlooked. This suggests that while they fully utilize smartphone convenience, their security awareness has not kept pace.

### 1 in 5 Investors in Their 50s Do Not Know the Concept

There is a massive gap in foundational cryptocurrency knowledge across generations. Shockingly, 20.0% of respondents in their 50s reported that they do not even know the concept of a "seed phrase."

Considering that the lack of awareness among those in their 20s is a mere 4.6%, the literacy gap between generations must be recognized as severe. This demographic likely has not even had the opportunity to be exposed to the concept of seed phrase management.

### Veterans Prefer Paper and Metal Plates

Veteran investors with more than 5 years of experience demonstrate a highly conservative attitude toward security. The proportion of those "writing it down on paper" reaches 32.9%, making it clear they prioritize physical storage methods. Furthermore, 17.7% employ the method of "engraving on a metal plate," which is highly resistant to hacking and physical damage.

It is evident that an awareness of isolating crucial information in offline environments is firmly established among those who fully understand the risks of online attacks.

### Immaturity in Management Among Beginners

Conversely, a highly precarious reality emerged among the demographic with less than one year of investment experience. 17.6% responded that they "do not manage it," and another 17.6% stated they "do not know of the existence of a seed phrase."

Combined, over 35% of beginners are leaving the keys to their assets completely unattended. Holding crypto assets without understanding how to manage them signifies being defenselessly exposed to market risks.
