The Minatomirai 21 district was selected by the Ministry of the Environment as a 'Decarbonization Leading Area' based on a joint proposal by the City of Yokohama and the Yokohama Minatomirai 21 General Incorporated Association, and is working on waste reduction and utilization in addition to decarbonizing electricity. Now, as a new initiative to reduce food waste in the district, a sustainable craft beer using popcorn generated at cinemas within the district as a raw material has been born. This is the first time in Japan that craft beer has been produced utilizing food waste as an initiative related to a decarbonization leading area.

2. Background of the Initiative While assessing and visualizing the status of resource circulation in the Minatomirai 21 district, it was discovered that a large proportion of the district's waste consists of food garbage. Therefore, the City of Yokohama and the Yokohama SDGs Design Center held study group meetings on food waste reduction with local volunteer facilities. Triggered by these meetings, local cinemas found that due to fluctuations in visitor numbers leading to variable popcorn sales, some popcorn inevitably reached its expiration date or was generated during the manufacturing process...
