12th Photo Contest Grand Prize Winning Work: "Rose Blooming Square"
Toshima Ward, in collaboration with the Minami-Otsuka Toden Route Council, will hold the "25th Otsuka Rose Festival" starting Sunday, May 3, at the Otsuka Rose Road* and TRAM Pal Otsuka.
To the Town of "Toden and Roses"! Otsuka Rose Festival Held
Along the Toden Arakawa Line from Otsuka Station to Mukohara, illegal dumping of garbage and unauthorized parking of bicycles were once regional issues. However, during environmental improvement efforts along the railway line in cooperation with local shopping districts and residents, about 100 rose bushes planted long ago were discovered. This sparked an initiative to make "Toden and Roses" a new seasonal tradition in Otsuka. Since 2010, local volunteers aiming for a beautiful and safe townscape have been planting and caring for roses every third Sunday of the month. Currently, the rose festival is held twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Today, the number of rose varieties is among the highest in Tokyo, with approximately 1,210 bushes of 710 varieties. At the Otsuka Rose Road, you can enjoy roses with various characteristics, such as "roses named after famous people" and "roses with wonderful fragrances."
In addition, on the first day, Sunday the 3rd, an opening ceremony will be held at TRAM Pal Otsuka from 10:00 AM. There will also be a highly successful spot sale of rose seedlings, sales of cut roses and Toden merchandise, and workshops for children.
Furthermore, in conjunction with this event, the 13th "Toden and Roses" Photo Contest will also be held. The photo contest is accepting photos of roses blooming at the Otsuka Rose Road and TRAM Pal Otsuka, and an awards ceremony for the winning works will be held at the autumn rose festival scheduled to start on October 11.

Upon hosting the event, Ken Koyama, Chairman of the Minami-Otsuka Toden Route Council, said, "This year again, the areas along the Toden line will be covered in colorful blooming roses and enveloped in their fragrance. When going out during the Golden Week or stopping by the area, please come and visit the town of Otsuka."
