Toshima Ward Tokiwa-so Manga Museum Special Exhibition: 90th Anniversary of Fujio Akatsuka's Birth 'Birth of the King of Gag Manga: Fujio Akatsuka Exhibition ~It All Started with Nama-chan~'

Toshima Ward Tokiwa-so Manga Museum will hold a special exhibition "Birth of the King of Gag Manga: Fujio Akatsuka Exhibition ~It All Started with 'Nama-chan'~" to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Fujio Akatsuka's birth, starting from Saturday, April 4, 2026.

This exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the birth of the "King of Gag Manga," Fujio Akatsuka, and is a special exhibition that approaches his highly turbulent creative life and unique world of expression. During the period, more than 100 precious original drawings will be exhibited, including works from his debut period as a shojo manga artist, the turning-point gag manga "Nama-chan" born during the Tokiwa-so era, the popular work "Osomatsu-kun", and his masterpiece "Tensai Bakabon", along with numerous materials that became sources of inspiration, thoroughly analyzing the evolution of Akatsuka's works and the true identity of his "laughter."

Furthermore, a newly discovered, unreleased interview video of Fujio Akatsuka will be shown for the first time at the venue, approaching the conflicts and philosophy behind his works, and the "inner self" of the human being Fujio Akatsuka.

What is "Nama-chan"?
Fujio Akatsuka's memorable first serialized gag manga (Akita Shoten "Manga Oh (Manga Oh / Shogakusei Gaho)" December 1958 issue - May 1962 issue). "Nama-chan", which funnily depicts a boy's daily life and family life with his mother, is a monumental work that can be said to be the prototype of Akatsuka gags.
