Station Plaza Monument Telling Maizuru's History Completed; Lighting Ceremony Held on June 1

Maizuru City has installed a new 'MAIZURU' monument at the East Maizuru Station North Exit Green Space, a new symbol for the city. To commemorate its completion, a lighting ceremony was held on Monday, June 1, the anniversary of the station's name change from Shin-Maizuru Station to East Maizuru Station on June 1, 1939.

Background and Concept

The area around JR East Maizuru Station has a history of prosperity as a naval and commercial port since the Meiji era, and is currently used as a hub for tourists and citizens traveling around Maizuru City.

The completed monument is themed 'Red Brick and the Sea.' The base reproduces the historical architectural styles of 'English bond' and 'French bond' actually used in the city's red brick warehouse group. Furthermore, a real anchor weighing approximately 2.9 tons, which was actually used on the retired JMSDF destroyer 'Matsuyuki,' is symbolically placed to express the history of the port town.
