Izumiotsu City will co-host the first 'Save the Sakura! Aromia bungii Summer Campaign 2026' capture event with Osaka Prefecture at Sukematsu Park on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The event includes capture experiences, egg hunting using blacklights, and specimen making. In recent years, the red-necked longhorn beetle (Aromia bungii) has threatened cherry trees. Izumiotsu City first confirmed damage in fiscal 2024, and it has since spread to nine new locations. Due to the beetle's high reproductive rate, administrative control alone is insufficient; community awareness is vital. The event will also feature a booth by the 'Sukematsu Park Sakura Preservation Society,' highlighting their year-round efforts. As a special incentive, the city will provide 3 go of Kinme rice to those who bring in 5 or more captured beetles.
