Chiba University, a national university corporation, promotes university-wide environmental management based on the international standard ISO14001 for environmental management systems. As part of this effort, a "Basic Environmental ISO Training" is held every April for all students, faculty, and staff, with students belonging to the "Chiba University Student Committee for Environmental Management System" serving as instructors. In fiscal 2026, 57 students served as instructors for a total of 125 training sessions.

Student-Led ISO14001 Management

Chiba University acquired ISO14001 certification in 2005. Prior to this, the Chiba University Student Committee for Environmental Management System, established in 2003, has been proactively involved in operating the Environmental Management System (EMS) as part of their education.

In addition to serving as instructors for basic training, the student committee plays a core role in the EMS, taking on tasks such as internal auditors, editing the sustainability report, and drafting environmental objectives, targets, and implementation plans. Overview of the Basic Environmental ISO Training

Chiba University consists of 11 faculties and 9 graduate schools, with approximately 14,000 enrolled students. This training is conducted at the beginning of the academic year for all students. It features a compact presentation of about 5 minutes aimed at fostering environmental understanding and promoting eco-friendly actions.

Because the training is aligned with the guidance sessions for each faculty, department, and year level, it amounts to over 100 sessions annually, with students acting as instructors for every session. For faculty and staff, training is provided via a video produced by the students.

This training introduces Chiba University's initiatives toward achieving the SDGs and raises awareness about concrete actions that can be practiced daily, such as energy conservation, resource saving, waste separation, and proper bicycle etiquette.

"Thanks to the cooperation of the student committee members and the faculty and staff, we were able to conduct all training sessions as scheduled. Although there were difficult moments during the operation, we felt highly rewarded seeing the participants listen so enthusiastically. Furthermore, delivering lectures in front of large audiences and presenting in English were invaluable experiences for us. We hope that this training serves as an opportunity for everyone to feel closer to Chiba University's environmental activities and leads to increased environmental awareness on campus."

About the Chiba University Student Committee for Environmental Management System

Since acquiring the international standard ISO14001 for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in 2005, Chiba University has designated the open operation of EMS closely tied with the local community as one of the pillars of its "Environment and Energy Policy." Operating the EMS primarily through students is positioned as an integral part of their education. The "Chiba University Student Committee for Environmental Management System," established in 2003, leads the implementation of the EMS and various environmental activities on campus and within the local community.
Every year, about 200 undergraduate students from their first to third years participate. They engage in a wide range of activities, including acting as internal auditors, creating environmental reports, and working on projects related to energy, paper, waste, leaf composting, campus greening, and environmental education. In recent years, they have also carried out multiple corporate collaboration projects aimed at achieving the SDGs. Furthermore, the committee obtained NPO status in 2009. As an NPO, they collaborate with companies on forest conservation activities and provide visiting environmental classes to local schools.
