Drawing 'Space Brothers' in Space: Celsys's 'CLIP STUDIO PAINT' Provides Technical Cooperation

Celsys will cooperate with Kodansha's 'Mission: SPACE COMIC,' humanity's first attempt to draw manga in space.

This mission will utilize the 'Kibo' Japanese Experiment Module aboard the International Space Station (ISS), provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), through the Kibo Utilization Program (*1). It aims to demonstrate remote drawing in space using a robotic arm installed within the module.

This project is a special initiative by Kodansha leading up to the release of the final volume of the manga 'Space Brothers,' which has been loved by many fans for approximately 19 years since its serialization began. Among the many companies collaborating on this project, Celsys will provide technical support for drawing using its illustration, manga, Webtoon, and animation production application, 'CLIP STUDIO PAINT.'

▼Project Overview and Background

In this project, drawing data created by Mr. Chūya Koyama, the author of 'Space Brothers,' using 'CLIP STUDIO PAINT' will be transmitted to a robotic arm on the ISS, realizing manga production in space. The completed video work is scheduled for release on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

Celsys's participation in this project was realized due to Mr. Koyama's daily use of 'CLIP STUDIO PAINT' as his primary drawing tool, and the recognition of Celsys's unique graphics technology accumulated over more than 30 years.

'Space Brothers' is a manga series by Chūya Koyama. It began serialization in Kodansha's 'Morning' in 2007. The story depicts the lives of brothers Mutta Nanba (Mutta) and Hibito Nanba (Hibito) who aspire to become astronauts. In 2011, it won both the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award (General Category) and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award (General Category). It has exceeded 35 million copies in circulation and was a major hit, adapted into an anime and live-action film. The serialization will conclude in June 2026 after approximately 19 years, with the 46th and final volume scheduled for release in July of the same year.
