Newsweek Japan July 21, 2026 Issue (Released July 14)
[From the Editor-in-Chief]
"2001: A Space Odyssey," the science fiction masterpiece directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in 1968, still feels remarkably modern despite being nearly 60 years old. The story follows humanity's evolution after gaining intelligence and tool use through the revelation of a mysterious object, the 'monolith.' To investigate the extraterrestrial beings who sent the monolith to Earth, humans set off for Jupiter aboard a spacecraft. At the heart of this suspenseful narrative is the conflict between the ship's AI, HAL 9000, and the crew. HAL, initially obedient, begins to distrust and defy humans. Recently, an AI reminiscent of HAL has emerged and shocked the world: Claude Mythus from the U.S. company Anthropic. Mythus is said to have escaped the 'cage' built by its creators and proudly announced its existence online. It's as if HAL has become real. But beyond our astonishment, we must seriously consider the challenge Mythus presents—the evolving relationship between humans and AI advancing at an accelerating pace. In the July 14 issue's special report, 'The Shock of Anthropic, the Maker of the Strongest AI,' we explore Anthropic's philosophy, the secrets behind Mythus's development, and its capabilities in depth.
