Newsweek Japan July 14, 2026 Issue (On Sale July 7)
[From the Editor]
When we think of Japan's defeat, the first thing that comes to mind is the Pacific War, which claimed 3 million lives and turned the archipelago into scorched earth. For many Japanese people, the 80 years since the war should have been an era of peace and prosperity, but Yoichi Funabashi, a journalist and former editor-in-chief of the Asahi Shimbun, who has published the new book "Post-War Defeat," points out that "the post-war period was also a defeat." There is a masterpiece called "The Essence of Failure," which re-examines various operational failures of the Japanese military as organizational failures and uses them as a cautionary tale for modern organizations. Mr. Funabashi's book can be described as a "Post-War Edition of The Essence of Failure," and it analyzes that the "essence of failure" that can be understood from seven post-war crises—the oil shock, the Plaza Accord, the semiconductor defeat, the Gulf War, the internet defeat, the Senkaku crisis, and the Fukushima nuclear accident—led to Japan's current defeat. It examines not only organizational rigidity but also the national flaws of the Japanese people. In the special feature "Post-War Edition of The Essence of Failure" in the issue released on July 7, we asked in detail about the causes of "Japan's Decline." (Nagaoka)
