PFAS Countermeasure Technology Consortium Launches Collaborative Project with Toyota Motor Corporation to Establish Digital Standards (DX) for PFAS Measurement Technologies

The PFAS Countermeasure Technology Consortium, administered by Campus Create Co., Ltd., has initiated a collaborative project utilizing Toyota Motor Corporation’s data analytics platform, "WAVEBASE," for PFAS measurement technologies.

This project aims to build a common, cross-sectoral foundation for reliable data analysis of PFAS measurement results, while deploying WAVEBASE as a digital platform for PFAS analysis to enhance the efficiency, sophistication, and real-world implementation of PFAS countermeasures.

The initiative is driven by recent technological advancements in PFAS measurement (Jiao et al., Nature Communications / Yu et al., Nature Machine Intelligence 2025). By integrating artificial intelligence, open databases, and the international standard analytical method ISO21675, technologies are rapidly being developed to detect and identify unknown PFAS compounds present in products and environmental samples. This enables not only traditional measurement and management of limited individual compounds but also more comprehensive and realistic PFAS assessment and control.

Additionally, this technology is expected to serve as a foundational tool for companies and manufacturers using PFAS to autonomously manage the environmental impact associated with the production and distribution of their products.

In this collaborative project, leveraging Campus Create Co., Ltd.'s track record as a broad-area Technology Licensing Organization (TLO), the consortium will promote the development of machine learning applications specialized in feature analysis and PFAS analysis, as well as practical case studies, in collaboration with industry, academic societies, and analytical instrument manufacturers. This aims to accelerate the establishment of a "digital standard (DX)" for PFAS analysis, advancing a system that supports the entire process from "measuring" to "judging," thereby enhancing the efficiency, sophistication, and societal implementation of domestic PFAS countermeasures.

【About WAVEBASE】
WAVEBASE is a cloud-based data analytics platform developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, serving as a Materials Informatics (MI) platform that supports data utilization in materials development and analytical fields. It enables end-to-end execution—from preprocessing experimental and measurement data, extracting features, constructing statistical models, visualizing results, to proposing next experimental conditions—allowing effective insights to be derived even from small datasets.

By integrating Toyota’s long-accumulated expertise in materials research and development with AI and machine learning technologies, WAVEBASE is designed for intuitive use, even without specialized data science knowledge. This enables standardization and improved reproducibility of analysis tasks that were previously dependent on individual expertise, supporting data-driven decision-making.

In this project, WAVEBASE will be applied to PFAS analysis, enabling structured data management, sharing, and advanced analysis of analytical data, thereby improving the efficiency and sophistication of the PFAS analysis process and serving as a foundation for decision support based on analysis results.

【About the PFAS Countermeasure Technology Consortium】
The PFAS Countermeasure Technology Consortium was established on June 21, 2021, with Senior Principal Researcher Nobuyoshi Yamashita of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) as Chairperson. Its mission is to disseminate technological seeds cultivated at AIST and the latest international research findings to domestic industries and local governments, thereby enhancing Japan’s PFAS countermeasure (measurement and treatment) technologies. The consortium operated until March 31, 2025.
In response to continued demand from industry, Campus Create Co., Ltd. assumed the secretariat role in April 2025, continuing activities under a new organizational structure.
