The National Film Archive of Japan is renewing its historical footage portal website and releasing 25 new works.

The National Film Archive of Japan is pleased to announce that on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 4:00 PM, we will be releasing 25 new works on our website "Films Record History - National Film Archive of Japan Historical Footage Portal -", which distributes film works such as cultural and documentary films in our collection, and will also be renewing the website.
This website, established on March 31, 2023, as the fourth website distributing our collection, has so far released 314 Japanese cultural and documentary films. With the addition of new works and the website renewal, you will be able to experience the cultural and documentary films as a mirror of the times more vividly.
This year marks the 100th anniversary since the beginning of the Showa era (1926). Please utilize these films as valuable historical materials through video. "Showa 100 Years Portal Site" (https://www.cas.go.jp/jp/seisaku/showa100nen/portal/)
Of the approximately 90,000 films in our collection, approximately 50,000 are Japanese cultural films, documentary films, and news films, which are live-action works other than feature films. This site will make these historical footage, which have had limited opportunities for screening, broadcast, or distribution on packages, available for full viewing.
Through the website, we aim to widely share the various aspects of Japanese society that have undergone repeated upheavals in modern and contemporary times, and the records of the people who lived in them.
Highlights
This release adds 25 silent cultural and documentary films shot and produced between 1923 and 1943. Enjoy historical footage that conveys the diverse aspects of the pre-war period, including travel films introducing scenery, industries, and lifestyles both domestically and internationally, records of national sports events and various commemorative ceremonies, as well as educational and propaganda films on themes such as air defense and military power.
In addition, we have renewed the site, focusing particularly on enhancing the search functions, such as enabling associative search.
