Next-generation mobility "TOCKLE" share service starts in Ine Town, Kyoto Prefecture

BRJ Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Hideaki Miyauchi; hereinafter "BRJ"), which develops electric mobility with a focus on safety to resolve "transportation gaps" in rural areas, launched a share service for its next-generation mobility "TOCKLE" in Ine Town, Kyoto Prefecture, starting April 1st.

Background

Ine Town is located in the Tango region, known as "Kyoto by the Sea," in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It is a tourist destination with a unique landscape featuring over 200 traditional "funaya" (boathouses) lining the coast. The town is dotted with diverse tourist attractions, such as Urashima Shrine, which is associated with the legend of Urashima Taro, sea kayaking experiences that leverage the natural beauty of the Sea of Japan, and portside dining where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood. Many tourists visit to enjoy strolling around.

On the other hand, despite being a small municipality with a population of approximately 2,000, Ine Town attracts over 300,000 tourists annually, leading to a significant increase in local transportation demand during certain periods. While parking cars and exploring on foot is currently the main mode of sightseeing, the widespread distribution of tourist spots and limitations in public transportation convenience have made improving visitor circulation a challenge. Furthermore, with many international visitors, there is a demand for intuitively usable transportation options.

Considering these factors, by introducing a sharing service utilizing electric assist bicycles, we aim to improve transportation convenience while ensuring safety, thereby promoting tourist circulation and revitalizing the local community.

1: Rural Areas, Not Cities

Buses and railways are currently facing a crisis of survival in rural areas due to deficits, reduced services, and a shortage of drivers. "TOCKLE" aims to resolve these "transportation gaps" in rural areas. Furthermore, rural areas, compared to cities, have less traffic and wider roads, making them easier to operate safely. For these two reasons—solving local issues and ensuring safety—"TOCKLE" primarily focuses on deployment in rural areas.

2: Preventing Entry into Dangerous Areas with Geofencing Function

"TOCKLE" is equipped with a "geofencing function," a safety system that detects the riding area via GPS and stops the vehicle if it enters a specific restricted zone. The "no-entry zones" set by geofencing can be flexibly configured by local governments according to the actual conditions of their respective regions.
