The Story of "Katagiri Mold Industry Co., Ltd." in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture

In 1947, the founder—the father of the current president—left his job at a watch manufacturer where he had been involved in mold making to take his first steps as an independent mold manufacturer from his home in Sumida-ku, Tokyo. The business was incorporated as a limited company in 1956 and transitioned to a joint-stock company in 1974, moving its factory to Adachi-ku as the business expanded. Later, in 1983, the company relocated its base to an industrial park in Tsukuba City (formerly Tsukuba Town), where it had established ties, and built a new factory the following year. Katagiri Mold Industry has steadily moved forward in step with the changing times.

The core of the business is mold manufacturing. It started with toys and later expanded into automotive parts. However, due to changes in the industry environment, such as the shift toward plastic, the company pivoted to the home appliance and office automation (OA) equipment sectors upon moving to Tsukuba. Growth was fueled by transactions with affiliates of major companies based in the local area, and today the business operates on three pillars: "electrical equipment," "OA equipment," and "office furniture." The client base is stable, consisting primarily of manufacturers, with about half being listed companies and the rest being small and medium-sized enterprises.

The company has nine employees, including the president and the executive director. It is a small, elite team consisting of three design/administrative staff, four manufacturing staff, and one sales staff (the executive director), with many members having long tenures. The workplace has a friendly atmosphere, and the staff is proactive and cooperative. What Katagiri Mold Industry values most is "never compromising on quality." This stance of delivering excellent products without compromise has earned the trust of their clients. Their equipment, including large-scale, high-precision machining centers, is one of their strengths, and based on the philosophy of "creating things that do not yet exist in the world," they have repeatedly taken on challenges that anticipate the future.

The reason for seeking a successor now is that the current representative, Mr. Katagiri, is finding it difficult to lead the company due to health issues. He is seeking a successor out of a strong desire not to let the high technical capabilities and valuable equipment cultivated over many years go to waste.

After the succession, the executive director intends to remain for six months to a year to provide solid support for the transition, including technical judgments and cost estimation. If a successor is not found, the business is scheduled to close on March 31, but some employees are hoping to return if a successor is found. This is a rare opportunity to take over both the long-nurtured technology and a well-balanced, small team as they are.

Requirements for a Successor

### - Someone who is interested in new technology and willing to take on challenges Katagiri Mold Industry is a company that has valued the spirit of challenge, "creating things that do not yet exist in the world." In the past, they actively engaged in technical development that was 30 years ahead of its time. However, in recent years, due to the aging of the management team, there is a recognition that they have not sufficiently challenged themselves with new technologies.

Meanwhile, in the mold industry as a whole, traditional methods are becoming difficult to sustain due to trends such as manufacturers bringing production in-house and acquisitions by foreign capital. Nevertheless, many companies still struggle with a lack of technical expertise, and there is still a need for companies with reliable technology.

To respond to the changing environment surrounding the industry, we believe that building on the technical capabilities cultivated over many years and taking on new challenges—rather than being tied to mold manufacturing alone—will lead to the next stage of growth for Katagiri Mold Industry.

### - We would like a competitor or a company with synergy to take over Mold manufacturing requires large-scale equipment and specialized technology, and the investment amount is high. Because the hurdle for an individual to take over is high, we are assuming a corporate succession rather than an individual one.

Companies that are a particularly good fit are competing mold manufacturers considering factory expansion or strengthening production capacity. Succession by the production technology department of a product manufacturer for the purpose of in-house mold production is also highly compatible. Furthermore, if the company has its own product manufacturing functions, such as press processing, it is easy to utilize the existing equipment and technology as they are, and significant synergy can be expected.

The foundation is already in place. There is significant potential for the further development of Katagiri Mold Industry through a corporate takeover.
