Asante Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Tadashi Miyauchi) (hereinafter Asante), providing comprehensive house maintenance services including termite control, has released the 2026 'Termite Warning*' on its website as a unique initiative to timely notify termite swarming information across 27 prefectures.
*The 'Termite Warning' is an initiative started by Asante in 2007, Japan's first effort to announce termite swarming information.
The Termite Warning consists of 'Forecasts' predicting the peak of winged termite swarms based on the past 10 years of occurrence trends and climate data, and 'Warnings/Alerts' compiled from occurrence reports continuously received by Asante. Winged termites appear only once a year between April and June, serving as a sign of termite damage, hence the alert.
From April to May this year, temperatures are high nationwide. Based on Asante's proprietary analysis, the peak of the Yamato termite swarm is expected to be slightly earlier than an average year. Please be careful, as Yamato termite swarms are highly likely to occur during the daytime when the temperature rises after rain.

Spring is the season when termites take flight. Could the winged insects you recently saw be the termites eating your home?
The two main types of termites causing major damage to buildings in Japan are the Yamato termite and the Formosan subterranean termite (Ie-shiroari). They are active under floors and inside walls all year round. However, Yamato termites swarm in large numbers as winged ants from April to May (June in the Tohoku region), and Formosan termites from May to July. If you see winged termites inside or around your house, there might be a termite nest.
Winged termites swarming / Winged termites emerging from a tatami room sill / Termite wings scattered inside the house
Yamato termite / Wooden posts severely damaged by termites / Risk of reduced building durability due to termite damage
■ What to Do When You Find Winged Termites
The appearance of winged termites indicates that there is a mature nest nearby and termite damage is progressing. As a temporary measure you can do yourself when finding a swarm, we recommend vacuuming them up or washing them away with hot water if they are in the entryway or bathroom. Using insecticides is not highly recommended because it might cause the termites to burrow deeper into the soil.
These are strictly temporary methods; be sure to consult a professional for an inspection and future countermeasures. Collecting a few winged termites in a tissue and keeping them is very helpful for the professional's inspection.
