Exhibition Overview

At GALLERY ROOM・A, a commercial gallery operated by the art communication platform "ArtSticker," a solo exhibition by Yumi Nagata titled "Patchwork" will be held.

Having studied Japanese painting techniques at Tama Art University and developed an interest in the texture and color of materials, Nagata primarily uses Japanese paper and pigments to translate her unique colors and expressions into paintings.

Nagata's works are constructed with delicate, pale colors and refined line drawings. The motifs depicted are girls with striking, large, clear eyes. Their figures are reminiscent of anime and manga characters we are familiar with, possessing a certain ephemeral beauty.

The title of this exhibition, "Patchwork," refers to the handicraft technique of creating a large piece of fabric by sewing together small scraps of cloth.

This act of "sewing together" intermingles Nagata's pure desire to depict the image of adorable girls she has loved since childhood with her own conflicting gaze, which attempts to view them objectively from the perspective of contemporary art. Fragments of emotions and memories that, at first glance, seem mismatched and scattered. By carefully sewing these together like a "patchwork," Nagata explores a new form of painting that is both accessible and deeply engaging for everyone.

The series of works, where seemingly contradictory elements meet seamlessly and acquire new meaning, appears to embrace and gently envelop the viewer's own inner fragments of memory.

We invite you to experience the world created by Yumi Nagata at the venue.

Statement

From birth until today, I have spent my time gathering, and sometimes letting go of, fragments of sensibility that arise within me.

"Patchwork," used in the exhibition title, is a handicraft technique of sewing small pieces of cloth together to make one large piece of fabric.

Suddenly, I thought that the structure of this patchwork resembled the form of art I aim for.

Connecting everything to create a world that, while seemingly mismatched, is entirely without contradiction.

To gain a real sense of the art I aim for, in this exhibition, I have reconnected the scattered pieces of cloth within myself and created works as if gazing at their patterns.
