Organizer's Comment
Sprout Curation will hold a series of group exhibitions titled "Aftermath of Light" at three venues from June to September 2026, with participating artists changing. This exhibition, "Aftermath of Light <ep.3>", is part of the "CADAN Butaiura" project and is a duo exhibition by Juri Akiyama and Noriaki Hattori at Gallery Butaiura, located within Azabudai Hills.
About the Exhibition Concept
In painting, if color is a dance of reflected light of different frequencies, and the emergence of an image is the result of complex responses between the support and tools, then artists who handle light might be choreographers, or perhaps closer to shamans in their reliance on the chance occurrences of light's behavior.
When the title of this exhibition is "Aftermath of Light" rather than "Remnants of Light" or "Work of Light," it becomes ambiguous whether the subject of the aftermath is light, the artist, or the viewer. It is none of them, and all of them at the same time. By blurring the lines between subject and object, we want to emphasize the nuance that this exhibition is a phenomenon woven from the relationships and networks of light, the artist, the work, and the viewer.
About the Artists
Juri Akiyama is a conceptual artist who explores the theme of "mottainai" (wastefulness), and in recent years, she has been energetically working with encaustic painting using beeswax. She mixes pigments with beeswax melted at high temperatures, applies it to a support to create multiple layers, and then scrapes and peels off the surface of the solidified beeswax with a hot iron, revealing images from the underlying layers. The illusion, accompanied by the unique luster and transparency of beeswax, creates a sense of being drawn into a mysterious space.
Noriaki Hattori is an artist who practices a unique technique using an industrial laser cutting machine. He creates paintings, which could be called industrial paintings, where images digitized from spray-painted aluminum plates are burned and revealed from the lower layers by laser. The reflection of aluminum and accidental noise add strength to his works.
Both artists establish their paintings by revealing latent images, albeit through different materials and tools.
Artist Profiles
Juri Akiyama / AKIYAMA Juri
Born in Tokyo in 1992. Spent her time from junior high school to university graduation abroad in Hong Kong, the UK, and the USA. Graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, Painting Department in 2015, receiving the Florence & Leif Award and participating in the Honors Exhibition. After returning to Japan, she completed her Master's degree in Global Art Practice at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018.
She practices conceptual painting that thematically explores "mottainai" and interpretively deciphers the very concept of painting. In recent years, she has been creating works that span objects, materials, states of being, form changes, and records and memories, using beeswax and drawing inspiration from its historical, cultural, and philosophical background. She is actively involved in projects such as participating in the Tokyo Biennale 2025 with a large-scale beeswax installation "Golden Floating Island" (Kakuchi Konpo Ten), and her co-directed work with filmmaker Philip Warnell will be exhibited at the Thessaloniki Biennale in 2026.

About Gallery Butaiura
"Gallery Butaiura" is an art gallery produced by The Chain Museum Co., Ltd., the operator of ArtSticker. Designed as a space that encompasses not only art appreciation but also human interaction, where performers and audiences can have intimate conversations backstage amidst the lingering atmosphere of a performance. It plans exhibitions featuring a wide range of artists, from veterans who have shaped art history globally to emerging artists attracting keen attention, sometimes incorporating elements of culinary experiences and performances.
This space is composed solely of a frame built with steel pipes and temporary exhibition walls hung on it. Although it is not a large space at 26 tsubo, it offers two different atmospheres by utilizing variations in floor height, lighting brightness and color temperature, and finishes. Through its unique spatial design, it aims to be a place where the front and back can be experienced seamlessly. It proposes a new viewing experience of mutual interference where gazes and presences intermingle through every gap.
