Specific categories such as medical texts, specialized professional books, war-related literature, military archives, and adult magazines often maintain demand in the second-hand market and, depending on content and condition, can yield high appraisal values.

However, many collections are disposed of simply because owners find them too voluminous to organize, are unsure of their value, or find it impractical to transport them to a bookstore.
