Seminar Content Structure ──────────── - Program/Lecturer - Ichiro Yoshihara, Director, Ichiro Yoshihara Professional Engineer Office

Knowledge and Technical Issues Addressed in this Seminar ─────────────────────── - An overview of technology for handling powders/granules. - The unique behavior of powders and granules as "discrete bodies," which differ from "continua" like gases and liquids. - An overview of "troubles" that arise specifically because they are powders/granules, and their respective countermeasures. - Understanding the concept of "rate-limiting" in drying technology to perform correct "scale-ups." - Scale-up is not about "increasing the size of the equipment," but "increasing the scale of the phenomenon." - Understanding which sensors and values should be measured to understand the "phenomenon." - What topics were discussed at "POWTECH Nuremberg" in Germany in September 2025?

Seminar Format ───────────── This is a live streaming seminar using the web conferencing tool "Zoom." Details will be provided after registration.

Full Program Details (Please see below if you are interested in the details) ────────────────────────────────────────────── [Lecture Purpose] Processes handling powders and granules are used in many fields as "morphological processes" in intermediate stages, but they are rarely seen by end users. While the morphology of powders and granules is extremely effective as a means of creating functional materials, unlike liquids and gases, their vast surface area causes unique troubles such as "clogging" or "sticking." Specialized academic disciplines have been established as "Powder Engineering" and "Powder Processes." In particular, the drying process changes the characteristics of the raw material during operation (from sticky to free-flowing, from lumps to powder), and the state changes completely. If not handled appropriately at each stage, trouble will occur. This is a fundamental technology that must be known to carry out work creating new "functional materials." In this lecture, we will use the "Transparent Powder Behavior Skeleton Model®" to make the "movement of powder" inside equipment visible, allowing participants to "visualize" the movement of powder as a "sensory experience." Based on the lecturer's practical experience, we will provide examples of simple scale-ups, explain the meaning of calculation formulas, and provide a lecture to help participants experience which parameters are prioritized for effectiveness. Based on his experience as a Professional Engineer, the lecturer recommends a method to achieve results in the shortest distance by clarifying the "selection of appropriate unit operations and the relationship with product physical properties" that matches the functions required for the final product, rather than "results from equipment chosen by chance."

[Program] 1. Introduction: Overview of Powder Technology. - Overview of all unit operations related to powders/granules and re-confirmation of their effects. - Introduction to the impact of powder technology handled in the industry and the state of functional particles. - Why are there so many troubles in processes handling powder? What are discrete bodies? - Why does the "separation phenomenon due to shape" of powders/granules, which is not seen in gases or liquids, occur, and what is the classification of their causes? - How can cost-effective troubleshooting be constructed? - How will powder processes change as IoT methods develop? 2. Drying Operation: Wet powder is a multiphase fluid (fine solid particles and liquid/gas). 2-1 Basics of drying operation 2-1-1 Classification of drying principles ~Selection of appropriate drying principles based on physical properties, considering raw materials and final form~ 2-1-2 Understanding that drying principles differ by grasping the drying curve, and determining the main parameters. ~Grasping the "drying curve" is essential for scale-up~ 2-1-3 Classification of drying equipment ~Understanding which principle the equipment uses~ 2-1-4 Thinking about drying equipment selection. ~Adapting to the form of raw materials and predicting the form of dried products~ 2-2 Practice of drying operation 2-2-1 Scale-up; Direct drying field 2-2-2 Scale-up; Indirect drying field 2-2-3 Other drying fields ~Experience with skeleton models: (Fluidized bed dryers, flash dryers, packed bed dryers, vibrating fluidized bed dryers, spray dryers, etc.) 2-2-4 Shape of dried products: Selection of drying principles according to "requirements of the next process" such as spherical particle state, flake state, obtaining primary particles in slurry, and adoption of equipment using that principle. 3. Troubleshooting for powder equipment 3-1 Causes of trouble (decomposing complex phenomena into simple factors) 3-2 Classification of trouble, thinking together with actual examples. There are appropriate responses for each factor. 3-3 Troubleshooting examples, there is not just one answer, but we will introduce actual examples. Choosing feasible responses from candidates. 3-4 Predicting and countering trouble, reducing initial costs with the concept of escape routes. 3-5 New possibilities for troubleshooting with IT. 4. Summary (Chemist + Data Scientist + Process Engineer) - The "visualization of particle behavior" required from now on. The role of numerical simulation. - How to classify what you have experienced so that it can be applied? - What engineers can learn in this field. Learning from failure. - What is required for technology handling powders/granules ~The beginning of the application of IoT, AI, VR, and AV~ [Q&A]

[Keywords] - Powder, granule technology - Powder is a demon - Overall heat transfer capacity coefficient - Drying, pulverization, granulation - Surface modification, compounding, spheronization - Powder is a temporary form until it is released to the world - Functional particles

[Lecture Points] There is no doubt that our work will be carried out more efficiently with AI and IoT technology from now on. However, experiencing powder phenomena and acquiring the relevant technology to use freely cannot be done efficiently; it requires steady, repeated effort to make it your own while experiencing it. This course explains the "path" to achieve that.
