Kozo Sato Photo Exhibition "Furusato Fuji: 10 Famous Mountains"
Mount Fuji, the symbol of Japan, has been revered as a sacred peak since ancient times. In the late Edo period, Mount Fuji pilgrimages called Fuji-ko became popular, and it became a place of ascetic training where people in white pilgrimage robes aimed for the summit. However, it was not an era where one could easily travel, and people from distant places gave their local famous mountains the name Fuji, believing that climbing them would bring the same blessings. There are over 300 mountains across Japan called "Furusato Fuji" (Hometown Fuji), many of which are sacred peaks and resemble Mount Fuji in shape. In any case, these are mountains called Fuji by affectionate nickname, in reverence of Fuji, the symbol of Japan.
This exhibition features an excerpt of 10 outstanding famous mountains from among them. It was a photographic journey traversing the archipelago, from Rishiri Fuji on Hokkaido's Rishiri Island in the north to Satsuma Fuji at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The Japanese archipelago, long and bow-shaped from north to south, is subtle and delicate in its topography, climate, and seasonal changes. I have painstakingly captured these scenes, paying particular attention to light, color, and seasonal changes. I would be delighted if many people could see these original landscapes of our homeland, including the scenery of Furusato Fuji and the surrounding foothills, which I wish to preserve forever.
I have been a freelance photographer for over 50 years, and I aim to continue shooting with the goal of being active my entire life.
