AEON Retail will begin selling MSC-certified Argentine red shrimp at approximately 390 stores, including "AEON" and "AEON Style," starting Wednesday, June 17. This marks the first time this product has been offered by a domestic retailer in Japan.
Since 2006, AEON has been offering products certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an international certification for sustainable fisheries, to help preserve limited marine resources and pass on Japan’s traditional seafood culture to future generations.
Argentina ranks as Japan’s fourth-largest shrimp import source. Argentine red shrimp, in particular, is popular in Japan as sashimi and sushi. This seafood product is exported to the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and its sales volume has surged over the past 15 years, highlighting the need for sustainable fishing practices. After about 10 years of improvements—including enhanced fishery management and better monitoring of bycatch—the coastal fishery received MSC certification in March 2025, followed by the offshore fishery in February 2026.
The Argentine red shrimp now being sold is caught off the coast of Chubut Province in Patagonia and is known for its rich, sweet flavor. It is processed headless with a slit along the back, making shell removal quick and easy.
Key Features of MSC-Certified Argentine Red Shrimp:
◆ World’s First MSC Certification for Argentine Red Shrimp Fishery After a Decade of Improvements
Starting in 2015, a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) was launched to achieve MSC certification. After nearly 10 years of efforts—including strengthened fishery management and improved bycatch monitoring—the Argentine red shrimp fishery became the first in the world to receive MSC fishery certification. This achievement ensures the long-term health of the resource and enables expanded distribution to global markets where demand for sustainable seafood is growing.
◆ Easy-Peel Back-Slit Design for Faster Meal Preparation
The headless shrimp with a back slit allow for quick and easy peeling, with the digestive tract already removed—reducing prep time significantly. Ideal for dishes like chili shrimp and garlic shrimp, and safe for raw consumption, making it perfect for hand-rolled sushi.
Moving forward, AEON will continue to expand its offerings of environmentally conscious products to help reduce environmental impact.

While shrimp are versatile in Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisines, AEON recommends trying "Shrimp Roll Samgyupsal," a Korean dish where pork belly is wrapped around shrimp, grilled, and topped with cheese. This luxurious dish combines the sweetness of shrimp with the juiciness of pork.
