- The Changed Landscape of English Education

More than three years have passed since English became a formal subject in elementary schools, and English education for elementary schoolers has become firmly established nationwide.

English curriculum guidelines changed significantly for elementary schools starting in FY2020 and for junior high schools in FY2021. Currently, 5th and 6th graders have two English classes a week, totaling 70 hours, and it has become a graded subject aimed at achieving a balanced improvement in the four skills of 'listening', 'speaking', 'reading', and 'writing'.

Now that it is a formal subject, class content is divided into 4 skills and 5 domains, creating a curriculum that maintains continuity with junior high school level English. The goal is the 'cultivation of qualities and abilities that form the foundation for communication'. This is virtually identical to the content of the conventional junior high school curriculum guidelines.

In other words, the level of English learned during elementary school has suddenly risen and become much more difficult.

Furthermore, the implementation grade for 'Foreign Language Activities (English)' has been pushed forward, now starting from the 3rd and 4th grades.

Additionally, the number of English vocabulary words to be memorized in junior high school has increased by 400 from 1,200, bringing the total to 1,600 - 1,800 words.
Junior high schools are aiming to conduct classes completely in English.
