Chiba Residents Only! A Special Week to Celebrate Prefecture Day (Chiba Kenmin Wari)

Gunma Safari Park, operated by Gunma Safari World Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, Representative Director: Shoichi Kikuchi), a facility offering an authentic safari experience, will host the "Chiba Residents Appreciation Week (Kenmin Wari)" from Saturday, June 13 to Sunday, June 21, 2026 (closed on June 16 and 17), as a special token of gratitude to the residents of Chiba Prefecture.

June 15 (Monday) during the Chiba Residents Appreciation Week is Chiba Prefecture Day.

This day commemorates the establishment of Chiba Prefecture through the merger of Kisarazu Prefecture and Inba Prefecture on this day in 1873 (Meiji 6). It was officially established in 1984 (Showa 59). Chiba Prefecture defines it as "a day to foster a spirit of knowing and loving one's hometown among prefectural residents, and to build a richer Chiba Prefecture that can be proudly passed on to the next generation," and it is a cherished anniversary for residents, with public schools in the prefecture closed.

Gunma Safari Park is designating the week including this special day as "Chiba Residents Appreciation Week" and will welcome residents of Chiba Prefecture with a special discount offered with heartfelt gratitude.

[Deep Connections Between Chiba and Gunma]

Chiba and Gunma Prefectures share deep historical ties. During the Edo period, the Tone River waterway served as the main artery of the Kanto region, transporting goods from Gunma down the river and via Choshi in Chiba Prefecture to all parts of Japan. In particular, raw silk and silk fabrics from Gunma, including the area where our park is located in Tomioka City, were distributed through the Tone River shipping and delivered nationwide as a major export that supported Japan's modernization.

Furthermore, in the Edo period, the Takasaki domain, which corresponds to present-day Gunma Prefecture, established a government office in Choshi, indicating a deep administrative connection between the two regions.

Tomio Silk Mill (Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture), registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2014 as part of the "Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites," conveys the bond between the two prefectures, nurtured along with the flow of the Tone River, to this day. [Chiba Residents Discount Prices and Purchase Methods]

During the event period, by presenting identification that confirms residency in Chiba Prefecture, children (elementary school students and younger) will receive free admission, and adults will receive a special discounted price of 1,000 yen off the regular admission fee. This discount applies only to the "admission fee" when entering with your own vehicle; options such as the park's tour bus, guided tours, and various experience fees are not eligible. Tickets can be purchased at the counter on the day of your visit, but advance purchase through the official website is recommended to alleviate congestion.

In the lush green safari zone of early summer, witness the vibrant lives of powerful wild animals such as lions, giraffes, Sumatran elephants (found only at this park in Japan), and white tigers (the largest population in Japan). We invite you to spend an exhilarating time at Gunma Safari Park.

About Chiba Prefecture Day

Chiba Prefecture Day (June 15) is an anniversary established to commemorate the birth of Chiba Prefecture through the merger of Kisarazu Prefecture and Inba Prefecture in 1873 (Meiji 6). It was officially established in 1984 (Showa 59) to celebrate the prefecture's population exceeding 5 million in 1983 (Showa 58).

This day is a public holiday for schools in Chiba Prefecture, and events are held throughout the prefecture, making it a widely cherished anniversary for the residents of Chiba.
