Parkinson's Patients Experience 'Riding a Bicycle Again'

This project was held on May 23-24, 2026, in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. It aimed to help those who had stopped cycling after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease to reconnect with the activity in a professionally supported environment, allowing them to regain confidence and discover new possibilities. Participants described the two days as 'very fun and over in a flash,' marking a valuable opportunity to re-engage in activities they had once given up on. On the first day, participants joined the 'Cycle Smile' event at the Iwaki Taira Velodrome. Staff from the Japan Para-Cycling Federation provided support using tandem bikes to help participants find their balance, while experts stood by to ensure safety. On the second day, the group experienced road cycling, departing from Shinmaiko Heights and riding toward the Shioyazaki Lighthouse. Accompanied by support vehicles, they enjoyed the scenery with their peers in a safe environment. We believe this camp demonstrated that with professional support, new challenges are possible.
