tofu is a service originating from Japan, developed by an engineering team based in Tokyo. With a global market in mind from its founding, it was first rolled out overseas and is currently implemented in over 50 countries, by more than 250 accounting firms and over 2,500 companies. The AI technology, born in Japan and refined globally, is now making its full-scale entry into the Japanese market in a "reverse import" fashion.

While cloud accounting software is becoming widespread in the Japanese accounting industry, the process from reading receipts and invoices to creating journal entries remains largely manual. Time that should be spent on core business activities is consumed by data entry. Existing OCR tools have low reading accuracy, leading to time-consuming corrections, and outsourcing to operators can often take more than a day to complete. With labor shortages becoming increasingly severe, automating this process is an urgent necessity for the entire accounting industry.

tofu resolves these challenges with AI. Simply upload documents such as receipts, invoices, and bank statements, and the AI reads the content, determines account titles and tax categories, and automatically creates draft journal entries. These can then be seamlessly integrated with existing accounting software. Instead of replacing current accounting software, tofu automates the "preceding steps" using AI. API integration with freee Accounting began in June 2026, and with Money Forward Cloud Accounting on July 1, 2026. Users of both services can complete initial setup with a single click and start using tofu immediately. Integration with other major accounting software will continue to expand.

Moving to a New Category: "AI Automated Bookkeeping" Instead of "AI-OCR"

Existing AI-OCR tools can read dates and amounts, but their judgment on "which account title this belongs to" is based on simple rules. tofu combines document information, learning data from past journal entries, and user-defined rules to automatically present optimal draft journal entries. Furthermore, its key feature is a "self-learning" mechanism that improves accuracy in real-time with every correction and approval, becoming smarter the more it is used.

It supports handwritten documents and over 200 languages, and is used by foreign-affiliated companies and firms handling multinational transactions. Accounting firms that have implemented it have seen bookkeeping tasks reduced by up to 70% (※2025 Time Study Survey, targeting accounting firms in Malaysia, Singapore, etc.) and productivity improve by 3 to 6 times.
