A First Step to Eliminating Unreadable Documents in Public Offices and Workplaces: tAIo Releases Free, Offline Ruby Text Generator

tAIo (Headquarters: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Yudai Nishiyama) has released the 'Automatic Ruby Text Tool by tAIo,' a web application that allows users to add ruby text (furigana) to Japanese documents for free and without registration.

This tool is a free web application designed to add ruby text tailored to the reader, for use in documents at government offices, schools, medical institutions, and workplaces.

Simply paste Japanese text into the tool's input form to automatically generate a document with ruby added to kanji characters.

In addition to Japanese processing technology such as morphological analysis, the tool leverages 'Gemini Nano,' a local LLM newly built into Chrome.

The tool is designed so that input text is processed on the user's device without being sent to a server, making it easy to test even with documents that may contain personal information or internal company data.

It supports copying with ruby, copying with parentheses, and exporting to Word files, aiming to be useful in document creation sites such as government offices, schools, medical institutions, and workplaces.

At government offices, schools, medical institutions, and workplaces, information directly connected to daily life and work—such as procedure guides, handouts, medical questionnaires, consent forms, and educational materials—is still conveyed through documents in many situations.

On the other hand, documents with many kanji or technical terms can be a barrier for those who do not speak Japanese as a mother tongue or those who have difficulty with reading and writing, preventing them from accessing necessary procedures or support.

To reduce the disadvantages and information gaps caused by being unable to read such documents, tAIo is providing this tool for free as a first step and is currently recruiting pilot and co-creation partners among municipalities, schools, medical institutions, and companies.

Background: The inability to read documents is more than just an inconvenience

There are many documents directly connected to daily life and work, including information guides at government offices, school handouts, medical questionnaires and consent forms, and workplace safety educational materials.

However, documents with many kanji or technical terms are a major barrier for those who do not speak Japanese as a mother tongue, families with roots in other countries, and those who struggle with reading and writing.

Not being able to read document information is more than just an inconvenience. It can lead to delays in necessary procedures, missing out on available support, or misunderstandings at work or in the community.

It is expected that the methods of conveying information, especially for documents where accuracy is critical—such as evacuation information during disasters and daily life support information—will be increasingly reviewed in the future.

There are over 4.12 million foreign residents living in Japan (as of the end of fiscal year 2025, according to the Immigration Services Agency), reaching a record high.

In addition, June is designated by the Immigration Services Agency as the 'Month for Promoting Appropriate Employment of Foreigners for the Realization of an Orderly Coexistence Society.'

It is important for foreign employees to correctly understand employment rules, safety and health education materials, internal manuals, and disaster information to create a safe workplace and ensure appropriate employment management.

However, this places a significant burden on those who create the documents.

Adding ruby word-by-word in Word is time-consuming, and layouts can break with every correction or adjustment.

Even when people know that 'adding furigana would be better,' existing methods are cumbersome, and some situations require caution when using external services depending on the content of the document.

To reduce that burden and dissatisfaction in the workplace, we have released the 'Automatic Ruby Text Tool by tAIo' as a free tool that can be used starting today.

What can be done with the 'Automatic Ruby Text Tool by tAIo'

The usage is very simple.

Access the 'Automatic Ruby Text Tool by tAIo' using a browser like Chrome. Paste or type the text you want to add furigana to. The result, with ruby automatically added to kanji, will appear in the preview box on the right. You can choose to 'copy with ruby,' 'copy with parentheses,' or 'download Word file' depending on your needs.

Software installation or account registration is not required. However, if you install it as an app, it will work completely offline without needing to access the page later.

Since it does not use external services provided on the internet, the text you input is not sent to a server.

Because the processing is completed within the browser, it is designed to be easy to try even in workplaces that handle personal information or internal documents.
